It’s called milk paint because the base ingredient for it is casein, which is the protein found in milk. In the raw state, casein looks a lot like powdered milk. The ingredients added to casein (milk protein) are chalk, clay, oxide (natural pigments) and limestone. That is ALL that is in Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint. Five all natural ingredients.
When applied to a raw wood surface and absorbed, Milk Paint will never chip or peel. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications and is naturally mold resistant. Milk paint provides a completely breathable coating and is ideal for painting wood, plaster and a variety of other surfaces.
It’s sold in powdered form because it will last indefinitely. When mixed with water to make the paint, it lasts for approximately one week, depending on how it’s stored. For this reason, just mix it in small amounts, as you need it.
Standard ratio of milk paint to water is 1:1 (i.e. one cup of powdered milk paint to one cup of water) but if you are looking for a thinner consistency just add small amounts of water to your liking. The 230gm size of powdered milk paint will create a total of around 1 litre of mixed paint at the standard ratio.
Approximate coverage ideas:
- The 30gm (sample) size will paint a side table, several mirror frames or a small chair
- The 230gm size will paint a dresser AND side table
- 2 x 230gm size will paint a large hutch
